About Dr. Woodiel

Dr. Loftin C. Woodiel is a dynamic fine arts performance professional with a successful track record of delivering with excellence.

Dr. Woodiel is a nationally recognized researcher and communicator with a demonstrated ability to achieve global understanding and compliance through quality discovery and presentation. He is a prolific writer with over 140 publications to his credit, and he has provided strategic leadership to a number of international and national initiatives and conferences. Dr. Woodiel was a 2017 Tony Award Nominee for Excellence in Educational Theater. 

His courses at MCHS are:  Choir I, Choir II and Music Performance.  Musically, responsible for all music concerts, community concerts, mass music and the MCHS House Band. He also sponsors the Music Club and the Tri-M Music Honor Society Chapter.  Woodiel is also the MCHS Theatre Director responsible for all theatrical productions and is the sponsor of the MCHS Drama Club and International Thespian Troup #602.

Over the last 6 years as the MCHS Theatre Director, the numbers of student participants has increased significantly as the quality of performance has been enhanced and recognized at the state level and, most significantly, in the seats of the theatres where his productions appear.  Most recent productions: You Can't Take It With You" (2017)," What Do You Say To A Naked Spotlight" (2017) and "The Addams Family Musical" (2016), "From the Mind of Aaron Shepard" (2016), "A Murder is Announced" (2015), "Legally Blonde - The Musical" (2015), "Annie - The Musical" (2015), "The Cry of the Crows" (2015), "The Diary of Anne Frank" (2014),  "Footloose - The Musical" (2014), etc. This school year's productions:  fall, "You Can't Take It With You"; winter," What Do You Say To A Naked Spotlight"; and spring, "The Addams Family Musical".

Over the last 5 years as the MCHS Music Teacher, Dr. Woodiel has demonstrated the instructional acumen to influence and drive change.  Student participation in the program has again increased significantly with expectations and quality surpassing anticipated goals.   During the last vocal music season, the choir and music performance team delivered 4 recitals/concerts, 12 solo grant performances, provides vocal music support for the Alton Mayor's Prayer Service, choir support at 6 church masses and one funeral, and circa 20 national anthem performances at various sporting events.  At the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Solo and Ensemble Music Competition, MCHS earned 50 state medals:  38 first superior ratings and 12-second excellent ratings, the largest and highest qualifications in MCHS history.

Dr. Woodiel was inducted into the International Thespian Honor Society in 1974.

Last year, Dr. Woodiel led a high school tour of students on a summer field trip entitled "Curtain Time in London" where they studied British Culture and Theatre.  This year, he will be leading a summer field trip to Austria, Germany and Switzerland to study European Musical Roots and Culture.

Degreed in multiple disciplines, Dr. Woodiel earned his Ph.D. from Saint Louis University, an M.A. from University of Central Oklahoma; a graduate certificate in University of Saint Andrews (Scotland); bachelors’ degrees from both Western Illinois University and Southern Illinois University; and an A.A.S. from the Community College of the Air Force.

This is Dr. Woodiel's fifth year at MCHS and in secondary education.  He has over 25 years of college and university teaching experience as an adjunct instructor and full-time professor.  Woodiel is currently an Associate Professor at Missouri Baptist University (MBU) and is the Director of MBU's Regional Learning Center on the campus of Lewis & Clark Community College.
